Mesas
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT THE GORGEOUS, COLORFUL WATERCOLOR PAINTING THAT HE SIMPLY CALLED “MESAS”:
I painted “Mesas” right on the spot, or au plein air, at the White Rock Overlook near Los Alamos, New Mexico. This view offers a spectacular panorama of mesas, which are common landscape features of this beautiful state.
For those who don’t know Spanish, mesa translates into English as “table.” In a geological contest, it’s an elevated area of land with a flat top and steep sides. It also happens to be one of the most common landforms in New Mexico… not to mention the most distinctive and characteristic of the state.
The river that we see here running through the canyon below those mesas is the Río Grande. The mountains in the background are the Sangre de Cristo range. The land mass to the left is the extreme eastern edge of the Jemez Mountains
