Mirror Lake in the Snowy Range

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS SHIMMERING “MIRROR LAKE IN THE SNOWY RANGE”:

“Mirror Lake in the Snowy Range” shows a sub-range of the Medicine Bow Mountains, which are a far-northern part of the Rockies. It lies on the southern edge of Wyoming, near the Colorado border.

Martha and I camped there at 11,000′ elevation for three nights, which gave both of us headaches. It was August and the nights were quite cold. But still, we loved the place and our experiences there.

Glaciers still filled gaps near the mountain peaks when we were there. There are many scenic lakes in the region. I enjoyed capturing both Mirror Lake and the glaciers in this painting.

I did a number of field studies during a visit to the area, which was part of my participation in the Wyoming Plein Air Painting event. It was my first time to paint in Wyoming outside Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and also the first time that I participated in such a large competition.

Great fun and I loved exploring southern Wyoming. Then, back home in Santa Fe, I made this “Mirror Lake in the Snowy Range”, using a combination of oil and acrylic paints.

Bernie was hard at work on the watercolor version of this painting when I caught him “in action” in the photo now shown on the BIO page of this website.

I also want to add that he painted several watercolors that were sold on the spot at the Wyoming painting event. No photos remain of those so we can’t offer prints of them here.
