Morning in the Desert

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “MORNING IN THE DESERT” FROM SOUTHERN ARIZONA:

Here we have the kind of classic plein air watercolor painting that Bernie often made on location. He would then take those works, along with photos, to his home studio to develop into larger, more-polished oil or acrylic paintings. In pieces like this, he uses minimum brush strokes and suggested more than he details… and yet the whole picture is just right.

Those of us who know and love the desert can almost hear the cactus wrens calling from atop those saguaros. We can smell the earthy fragrance and feel the cool early-morning air before the sun heats it up.

He later made a much larger acrylic painting of the same subject, “Desert Morning.” It’s a good example of the kind of polished studio pieces that he made from on-the-spot watercolors like this.

I like to contrast the feeling of this watercolor with “Saguaro Sunset,” which reflects the same kind of landscape in the late afternoon.
