Morning in Ouray

MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ ELEGANTLY SIMPLE “MORNING IN OURAY” WATERCOLOR:

At the height of autumn 2004, Bernie and I were in Ouray, Colorado, enjoying that charming old mining town for the first time and spending a few weeks exploring the wider area. It was a gorgeous fall, including the snow that fell about halfway through our trip.

“Morning in Ouray” is a plein air painting that Bernie did from a roadside overlook just outside town. It perfectly captures the special light and views of the mountains, buildings, main street, and waterfall. So if you come into Ouray on the main road from the north, this is probably how you first see it.

A gallery in Santa Fe sold the original “Morning in Ouray” years ago, but I’m delighted to be able to offer an excellent giclée print of it here.

BERNIE MADE 9 WATERCOLORS FROM THAT ONE MEMORABLE TRIP:  Above the Uncompahgre,“Aspen Shadows,” Morning in Ouray,” “Mountain Color,”Mountain Stream in Fall,” “Riding a Country Road,” “Snowy Tracks,” “Winter Rapids,” and “Vanishing Point in Colorado.
