Mountain and River
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ BIG, BOLD OIL PAINTING “MOUNTAIN AND RIVER”:
“Mountain and River” captures a magnificent scene from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, one of the longest ranges on earth. “The Sangres,” as we locals call them, extend from northern New Mexico through Colorado to Wyoming. There’s an amazing collection of peaks along the way, including ten at 14,000′ or more and over two dozen 13,000′ or more.
This “Mountain and River” scene could be anywhere in the Rockies. I’ve chosen to put it into the Colorado section on this website, but it could be in either of the other states too. Bernie and I explored every accessible part of the range, so I can’t say exactly where he painted this one.
No matter where you happen to drive in the Sangres, you’re guaranteed to notice two key features: mountains and rivers. Trees too, of course, and if you go in the fall, it’s masses of yellow aspens and cottonwoods. There are fabulous views, too, both closeups within the mountains and long views to the west, where you’ll almost always see more mountains. And more rivers. Exactly as “Mountain and River” shows them.
