Navajo Country
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “NAVAJO COUNTRY,” AN OLD-FASHIONED STYLE WATERCOLOR PAINTING:
“Navajo Country” reflects a very different and intentional stylistic turn for Bernie. I clearly remember the conversation when he told me about it.
For several days, he had been sketching and photographing in northeastern Arizona, laying the groundwork for some oil paintings of Navajo country. (He ultimately made several.)
When he came home, he said he wanted to do his first piece from that trip in watercolor, which he hadn’t worked with in a long time. And on top of that, he intended to give it an old-fashioned watercolor feeling… the kind you see in Santa Fe galleries that specialize in the artwork of long-deceased artists. That’s what he set out to do in this piece, and by golly he got that feeling just right.
As a result, “Navajo Country” is deliberately subdued, classic in feeling, and quite soft, like something that might have been painted in the first half of the last century. To me, it feels like a snapshot out of time.
