MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ GORGEOUS OIL PAINTING “NEW MEXICO MAGIC”:
Bernie painted all over New Mexico. He found many different kinds of natural scenes and a wide variety of human-related subjects. One thing he most enjoyed finding was a picturesque adobe house, like the one shown in “New Mexico Magic.” Not only can such places be remarkably charming but they often express quite clearly the beliefs and personalities of their owners.
“New Mexico Magic” is a good example. It’s a composite of several homes whose owners clearly understand and appreciate traditional New Mexico pueblo culture, both the symbolic and the practical. That’s reflected in the hand-carved kachina figures and symbols hanging in the windows and open door. The bright-red chile ristras are another tip. And the lush garden, carefully cultivated even in the desert, is another sign.
Bernie made “New Mexico Magic” toward the end of his life and never publicly displayed it. That’s a shame, because I believe it’s one of his best ever.
