New Mexico Summer
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS “NEW MEXICO SUMMER”:
“New Mexico Summer” shows a family home in the traditional New Mexico style. The adobe construction. The blue-painted window frame. The vigas (wooden beams) extending through the walls. The ristras (strings of dried chiles) hanging under the portal. The expansive flower garden bursting with color.
This actual house and garden are located in a town founded in 1598. The family that lives there now has been farming this land for over four hundred years. Their irrigation water comes from the nearby Río Grande, delivered to the family orchard by acequias (irrigation ditches) dug by hand centuries ago.
MARTHA MARKS ADDS:
I like to point out how masterfully Bernie guides our eyes through “New Mexico Summer.” The diagonal lines of the hills and path lead our gaze straight toward the ristras hanging under the eaves of the house. It all works very well… assuming we can pull our eyes away from the blooming flowers in the foreground.
