Paradise Valley

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “PARADISE VALLEY” FROM THE COLORADO ROCKIES:

There’s a famous area just east of Crested Butte, Colorado called Paradise Divide. It’s a wonderfully scenic drive through a spectacular valley at an elevation of 11,250′. The river that runs through it creates this scene of the Paradise Valley moments before it passes under the road that leads from Crested Butte to the ghost town of Gothic. This was one of our favorite destination drives anywhere in the Colorado Rockies.

Once time when we crossed the bridge there, Bernie stopped so we both could take some photos. Later, back in his snug warm studio, he turned those pics into this watercolor painting.

Of all his many watercolors, Bernie’s “Paradise Valley” stands out in several ways. Because of all that snow, it’s got the most subtly colored white space. Because of all that fast-flowing current, it’s got the bluest water. Because of all those spectacular Rocky Mountains, it’s got one of the most scenic backgrounds. This original painting “Paradise Valley” was a showstopper that sold quickly from his gallery in Santa Fe, and the print that’s still available of it is pretty darn nice too.
