Randall Davey House
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WATERCOLOR “RANDALL DAVEY HOUSE” FROM EARLY 20TH CENTURY SANTA FE:
Everybody who visits Santa Fe knows about Canyon Road. It’s one of the world’s top destinations for tourists and art collectors.
But those who want to dig deeper to find the “real Santa Fe” don’t settle for the art galleries. One thing they also do is follow Canyon Road up the mountain that looms over Santa Fe. (It’s possible to walk it for a while. But if you’re aiming to go the whole way up and down, you’ll be grateful for a car.) Lots of charm along that scenic route, and great color too, in autumn.
Those who want a taste of nature, or simply need to get out and walk around after all that art and driving, will persist to the end. Eventually, that narrow road leads to the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary.
As its name suggests, this is a marvelous place for birdwatching. It’s also great for imagining what a inspiring place it must have been for an artist named Randall Davey (1887-1964).
Originally from New Jersey, Davey moved to Santa Fe in 1919. The next year, he bought this rustic property for his home and studio. Over time, he expanded the original small adobe building into the lovely place that Bernie captured in this watercolor.
The Randall Davey house is a classic New Mexico adobe structure. But it’s the near-mountaintop location above Canyon Road that really captures the imagination. Tourists, artists, and nature lovers drive up to experience the place, the birds, and the history. Bernie painted there many times with his plein air group. This painting dates from about 2002-2003.
NOTE: This is one of the few paintings that Bernie did not sign. I suspect he wrapped it up, left the scene, and never realized it wasn’t signed. I will provide a statement of authenticity to any buyer of this print who requests it.
