Rendija Winter

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ HIGHLY UNUSUAL PAINTING “RENDIJA WINTER”:

Rendija (pronounced: ren-dee-ha) is the Spanish word for “crack” or “cleft.” It’s also the name of a canyon and popular hiking area in the Santa Fe National Forest of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

That much I understand.

But there are two things about this painting that I don’t understand:

First, why did Bernie paint it the way he did? There are almost no defined edges anywhere, only subtle shadings in the soft snow and swirling water. It’s a very different style for him, so maybe he was deliberately experimenting when he did it.

Second, why did he venture out to paint it in the winter, his least-favorite season for plein air painting? He didn’t even like going out then to make photos that he would later turn into studio paintings. Those are the only two reasons I know for why he ever hauled his gear out on location, and he wasn’t a fan of cold weather.

But for whatever reasons Bernie happened to be in Rendija Canyon on a wintry day, painting in an entirely new style, I’m glad that he produced such a beautiful and distinctive piece of art. “Rendija Winter” takes me out to that lovely spot, in my mind, with him.
