Rio Grande Medley
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL OIL PAINTING “RIO GRANDE MEDLEY”:
“Rio Grande Medley” shows the Rio Grande as it flows approximately 1900 miles from south central Colorado through New Mexico, through Texas, and on to the Gulf of Mexico. Along its way down the heart of New Mexico, it passes this spot at Embudo Station, which just happens to be one of my favorite painting spots.
The town of Embudo was founded in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad opened a station there. Not much remains of that town these days, but some intriguing structures are still left in this highly picturesque bend of the Rio Grande. I painted some of those buildings their striking high-desert landscape in “Embudo Station.”
I painted this studio piece, “Rio Grande Medley,” based on field studies that I’d made on a beautiful autumn day when the cottonwood trees and native grasses and wildflowers were putting on a spectacular display along the river.
