Rito de los Frijoles

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EXQUISITE “RITO DE LOS FRIJOLES”:

This stream, called a “rito” in New Mexico, flows through Bandelier National Monument in the Jemez Mountains west of the Rio Grande, near Los Alamos. In English, the stream is called Frijoles Creek. It’s a much-loved part of this remarkable place.

“Frijoles” is the Spanish word for beans, which of course was one of the basic Native American foods of the Southwest. And that explains the name “Rito de los Frijoles.” The name may be unusual — even hard to say for those who don’t speak Spanish — but Bandelier National Monument is well worth a visit… an historic marvel and a natural treasure.

Frijoles Creek is familiar to all who visit the monument, because it flows right through the area that most people see. Bernie and I were there many times, and he painted it in several seasons. Clearly, this glorious watercolor shows it in late fall or early winter.

I’ve always thought this piece was “Bernie at his best”… perfectly evoking the place and time in one of his loveliest watercolors ever.
