The Road to Gothic, Watercolor Version
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “THE ROAD TO GOTHIC,” HIS FAVORITE WATERCOLOR OF A FAVORITE PLACE:
Bernie interpreted this scene — the rustic road from Crested Butte, Colorado, to the nearby ghost town of Gothic — in many different ways. I bet he painted it every time we went there. But this was his favorite watercolor version, which is why I’m proud to offer it here as a big, beautiful giclée print.
This website also showcases his two gorgeous oil versions:
- “The Road to Gothic, Oil Version”
- “Rocky Mountain Spring” (Shows the same valley from a higher-up perspective.)
Once a boom town in the West Elk range of the Colorado Rockies, Gothic grew to more than 1,000 residents and was a major supply point for mining camps until 1893. After the Silver Crash of ’93, also known as the Denver Depression, it was mostly deserted. It faded away after that, like many other early mining communities.
But unlike most other such places, Gothic now has a new life as the home of an environmental research station, the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. It’s also the home of a healthy population of Yellow-bellied Marmots, whom I’ve enjoyed photographing on our trips there.
