MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ CHARMING WATERCOLOR “SAMPLING AT THE FARMERS MARKET”:

During the early 2000s, Santa Fe gradually moved and updated its Farmers Market. In 2008, the City Different’s various efforts culminated in a brand-new, state-of-the-environmental-art LEED building that now houses most of its vendors. The new Farmers Market is wonderful.

But for years before that, farmers simply sold fresh produce to customers out of their trucks, as this “Early Bernie” watercolor shows. It’s the kind of painting that Bernie loved to make. Spontaneous and colorful, it captures an authentic sense of place and time.

“Sampling at the Farmers Market” dates from the second half of the ’90s, when Bernie and I were falling in love with New Mexico and visiting several times a year, but before we made our permanent move in 2002. That timing qualifies it as an “Early Bernie” watercolor. In some ways, it’s a more polished work than those he made in the ’70s, but it still falls within the “Early Bernie” time frame of 1970-2000.

We framed this piece when we made that move and hung it in our new home. Recently, I “liberated” it from its heavy frame and had it professionally photographed. So now I can offer both the original and top-quality archival prints for others to enjoy as much as we did.
