San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EXQUISITE “SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS CHURCH IN RANCHOS DE TAOS”:
Let’s say you’re driving on New Mexico State Route 68, called the “Low Road to Taos,” a scenic byway along the Rio Grande. It starts at the town of Española, passes through several rural towns, and finally leads you to funky Taos.
About four miles out, you pass through another historic community. Ranchos de Taos itself doesn’t have much to offer visitors, except this fine old adobe building. Completed in 1816, it’s worth a stop in Ranchos de Taos! It’s hard to find a better, well-preserved example of a Spanish Colonial church.
Slowly make your way through Ranchos de Taos. Carefully allow your eyes to scan right. When you spot massive adobe buttresses and twin bell towers you’ll know you’ve reached the historic San Francisco de Asis Church. Ease into the driveway and around the church to the tiny plaza on the opposite side. Park and take a leisurely walk around this magnificent adobe structure. Locally known as the Ranchos Church, it’s a true classic.
Ansel Adams photographed this classic adobe building. Georgia O’Keeffe painted it. And so did Bernard Marks, several times. Quite nicely, too.
