San Miguel Church
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “SAN MIGUEL CHURCH”:
The tiny chapel that Bernie captures in his ethereal “San Miguel Church” is said to be the oldest in America. It’s situated in Santa Fe’s historic Barrio de Analco and faces the original Santa Fe Trail. In the 1800s, traders, settlers, and rogues of all sorts followed that route from St. Louis to this capital of the Mexican province of Nuevo Mexico. It’s is also steps away from the oldest house in America, 3 blocks from Santa Fe’s famous Plaza and Cathedral, and kitty-corner from the Roundhouse, the State of New Mexico’s unique adobe capitol building.
San Miguel Church is an essential part of this oldest, highest in elevation, and perhaps most foreign-feeling capital city in the United States. Built as a colonial mission around 1610 by Native American craftsmen who traveled north with the Spanish conquistadores, it remains a marvel of thick-walled adobe construction and the faithful dedication of its parishioners from that time until now.
“San Miguel Church” is unique in Bernie’s portfolio. I don’t believe he ever painted the interior of any other building, much less one this remarkable.
