MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WELCOMING “SANTA FE COURTYARD”:
Bernie didn’t often paint close-up details of buildings, especially those without people in and around them. Not even if those buildings represented the iconic “Santa Fe style.”
But that’s exactly what he did here, and he pulled it off quite well. Everything in the painting invites you in. The open door. The stairs leading up to the sunlit wall and patio beyond. Even the traditional cow skull on the wall let’s you know you’ve come to a unique place.
There’s a distinctive character to Santa Fe’s old adobe structures. You don’t have to actually see the people who inhabit them to know they’re there… and to know that there have been many generations of others there before them.
This piece is unique among Bernie’s work. I’ve always loved it and am pleased to offer it here as an excellent giclée print.
