Santuario de Chimayó in Spring
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ CHEERFUL “SANTUARIO DE CHIMAYO IN SPRING”:
The Santuario de Chimayó is a revered Roman Catholic adobe church. It’s located in the small, isolated town of Chimayó, about halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. Quite a moving place to visit.
The shrine is also a National Historic Monument popularly called the “Lourdes of America.” Each Holy Week, the faithful walk long distances — pilgrimages, really — to this tiny structure to give thanks for recovery from sickness and injury and seek future blessings. There’s even a room inside that displays abandoned crutches. To the faithful locals, those crutches prove the healing power of the miraculous dirt in the floor of the adobe church, which supposedly has the power to perform miracles.
Bernie painted the Santuario several times and in several seasons. He sold all but one. This is the one he chose to keep, carefully wrapped up and protected for over a decade. That tells me he valued it a lot.
PLEASE NOTE: For some reason, Bernie didn’t sign this painting. If desired, I can provide a certificate of authenticity for the original painting and prints.
