MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ PLEIN AIR WATERCOLOR “SEA STACKS ON THE OREGON COAST”:
Bernie and I only made one trip together to Oregon, sometime in the early 1980s. It was always on our must-go-back-to list, but we never did get back. And that’s a shame, because we greatly enjoyed the unspoiled coastline that we found there at that time.
I believe we also saw sea stacks on the California coast, but this is the only painting Bernie ever made of that unique landform.
This painting and the others that I’ve identified on this site as “Early Bernie” watercolors all date from 1970 to 2000. There aren’t many of them left, and no digital photos exist at all except for those we’ve had in our possession all this time… because of course, digital technology wasn’t available when the painting was new.
The only reason this painting is available now as a top-quality archival print is that we had it framed and displayed in our home for all those years. After Bernie’s death, I “liberated” it from its dated frame and had a professional photographer-of-art perform his magic on it. That’s why it’s now available as superb large prints… as well as that “liberated” original painting, which is still in excellent condition.
