Sedona

BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS DELICATE WATERCOLOR PAINTING “SEDONA”:

The lovely town of Sedona is located in the historic Verde Valley (“Green Valley”) of northern Arizona. Its main attraction is an array of massive red sandstone formations. Those red rocks form a popular backdrop for a wide variety of activities, including the making of major Hollywood movies. There are several highly scenic state and city parks.

The first documented human presence in the Verde Valley dates as far back as 11,500 B.C. The first Anglo settlers arrived in 1876. Martha and I arrived exactly 120 years later and found it every bit as appealing as those early homesteaders surely did.

My watercolor “Sedona” shows a typical rock formation in this beautiful part of the Southwest.

MARTHA MARKS NOTES:

Bernie and I visited Sedona over a period of twenty years. We watched it evolve from a relatively small, sleepy town to a major tourist mecca. Traffic increased significantly. Residential neighborhoods climbed the magnficent bluffs. Natural parks and beloved land forms such as “Cathedral Rock” were threatened in a variety of ways. It’s still a beautiful place, but I’m glad we got to know it before it hit the big time.

Two of Bernie’s other paintings and/or prints from this area are “Sunset Watch at Sedona” and “Testing the Water.”
