MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EVOCATIVE “TAOS RUSTIC”

Taos, New Mexico, holds a special place in the hearts of those who treasure the “real” Old West. It’s a combination of the traditional ranching life and the “New Mexico True” of contemporary tourism ads. For sure, there’s a lot of real, authentic New Mexican truth in the mountains around that storied town.

In this painting, Bernie captures the experience of looking down from a mountain road into the business end of one of those tucked-away Old West ranches. There are no people or animals in this scene. That’s unusual, since Bernie enjoyed painting them so much. But here he seemed to want to focus on the weathered structures and their rustic setting.

This scene is lovely, but absolutely nothing is happening or changing there. Knowing Bernie as I do, I suspect that’s the point he was trying to make. What we see here is just the way things have been around these parts for — oh, let’s take a wild guess — four hundred years or so.
