Teton Ranch
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ POWERFUL “TETON RANCH” FROM GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK:
I don’t recall if Bernie and I spotted this ranch scene, which he called “Teton Ranch,” inside the borders of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming or just outside them. Doesn’t really matter.
What I do recall is how strongly Bernie reacted to it. He had to paint it! But we were always on the way to somewhere else. During the several days we were there, we kept passing by this spot, and every single time he said, “I’ve got to paint that.” Finally, he did. And aren’t we all glad that he did?
The horses weren’t always in the same place, of course, but this is how they had arranged themselves when we finally stopped. Bernie set up his easel and did a plein air watercolor sketch as I walked up and down the fence line, taking photos. Later on, back in his Santa Fe studio, he made this final painting from my photos and his sketch.
What came of all that watching, waiting, painting, and finally re-painting is “Teton Ranch,” a powerful, classic ranch scene from Grand Teton National Park.
