The Road to Gothic, Oil Version
BERNARD MARKS WROTE THIS ABOUT HIS BEAUTIFUL PAINTING “THE ROAD TO GOTHIC, OIL VERSION”:
“The Road to Gothic, Oil Version” shows the scenic byway through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado from Crested Butte to the ghost town of Gothic.
Once a boom town in the West Elk range, Gothic grew to more than 1,000 residents and was a major supply point for mining camps until 1893. After the Silver Crash, aka the “Denver Depression,” which happened that year, it was mostly deserted. It later faded like many other early mining communities. In recent years has found new life as the home of a scientific research station, the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.
I originally painted “The Road to Gothic” in watercolor from a promontory overlooking the road, then took that sketch and photos home to redo in oil. See my favorite watercolor version.
Martha and I have driven this primitive road several times, and also hiked a bit up above it. Not only is this a beautiful trip, especially in the fall and early winter, but whenever we’re in Crested Butte, we always get a kick out of saying, “Let’s go to Gothic!”
