Veterans Cemetery in Santa Fe
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EVOCATIVE WATERCOLOR “VETERANS CEMETERY IN SANTA FE”:
This is one of a series of sweet, gentle plein air watercolors that Bernie made during our early visits to Santa Fe and in the first few years that we lived here. It’s an actual view from the north, most likely made from an overpass above a main route into town.
This particular Veterans Cemetery has an interesting history on its own. It began in 1870 on a sliver of land donated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe and expanded a bit five years later when the federal government purchased an additional parcel. On April 6, 1875, it was formally declared the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
One might wonder why an area this far from the eastern Civil War battlefields should need a national cemetery. But the thing is… even remote New Mexico saw some battles, and veterans from the east were moving here, too. And since then, many New Mexicans have fought in America’s wars.
This cemetery is set in a beautiful location along Highway 285, which leads north out of town. Funerals are still held there, and every Memorial Day it’s covered with American flags. Quite a lovely, peaceful place… just as Bernie shows it here.
