View of the South Fork

MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ GLOWING “VIEW OF THE SOUTH FORK” FROM SOUTHERN COLORADO:

“View of the South Fork” shows a relatively unknown area in southern Colorado that Bernie and I first visited in 2000. We hadn’t yet moved to New Mexico and were having fun getting to know the neighborhood.

In this scenic area, the South Fork River and the Rio Grande emerge from the local moutains to join up in the southwest corner of the San Luis Valley. Bernie’s painting “View of the South Fork” shows the spot where the South Fork rushes out of the San Juan mountains. Soon, after joining up with the Rio Grande, its waters head south to New Mexico, Texas, Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico. The Continental Divide cuts through these mountains, lakes, and forests, too, in addition to that lovely pair of rivers.

Most people who travel to the South Fork area are there to backpack, fish, mountain bike, etc. Some are just looking for lunch in one of the roadside joints while headed higher up to the picturesque mining town of Creede. We were there to paint scenes like “View of the South Fork” (in Bernie’s case) and photograph birds and other wild critters (in my case).

Bernie’s original watercolor “View of the South Fork” sold fast, but not before he had redone it as this more-polished acrylic. Soon, this one was sold, too. I’m happy to offer excellent giclée prints of it here.

Excellent custom-made giclée prints on thick matte archival paper are available.
