Whitewater Canyon
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS EXQUISITE WATERCOLOR “WHITEWATER CANYON”:
Whitewater Canyon is located in the Gila National Forest, tucked away in the Mogollon Mountains of southwestern New Mexico. Like many other mountainous areas, it’s mind-bogglingly beautiful.
But what makes Whitewater Canyon special is the access to the interior provided by a metal catwalk hanging from the rock walls. The National Forest Service offers access through its Catwalk Recreation Area. If it weren’t for the catwalk, this narrow, intimate, and water-filled canyon would be almost inaccessible, especially to those who, like me, traipse around with painting gear.
With very little room to work, I took photos and did quick sketches on site and then, back in my Santa Fe studio, turned them into this finished watercolor painting.
MARTHA MARKS ADDS: “Waterfall at Whitewater Canyon” is Bernie’s other finished painting from this magical place. They show his amazing touch with water and rocks. I’m proud to offer excellent prints of them both, because they make a lovely set.
