Wilderness Road
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ LOVELY OIL PAINTING “WILDERNESS ROAD”:
“Wilderness Road” came about in the summer of 2009, when Bernie and I drove all over southern Wyoming. He was participating in the annual “Wyoming Paint Out” competition. We hunted out great landscapes that weren’t obvious and found them in the Snowy Range of the Rocky Mountains.
At 11,000′ feet, the nights were cold and the days were crisp. Fall color was coming in fast, The night skies were amazing. It was our first and only extended visit to that part of the state, and we loved it.
In “Wilderness Road”, Bernie captured what we’d come to enjoy about that area. Towering mountains and trees. Great grassy fields. And a remarkable number of eagles. We probably saw more bald eagles and golden eagles on that trip than anywhere else in all our ramblings around the American West.
So, of course, Bernie had to include a eagle in this painting. I won’t swear that an eagle actually flew out of those exact trees at the precise moment we drove over that ridge and descended into that valley. Let’s just consider him a stand-in for all the other eagles that blessed us with their presence on that trip.
