Along Pa’rus Trail

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WATERCOLOR “ALONG PA’RUS TRAIL” IN ZION NATIONAL PARK:

Bernie painted this watercolor around 2005. Between 2003 and 2010, we explored southern Utah extensively. He made many watercolors, acrylics and oils during that time.

This was one of several large paintings that he produced in his studio from plein air studies done in southern Utah. The owner of a prominent Utah bank bought six of them at once from a gallery in St. George. We always wondered if we might spot them if we dropped into the bank’s various branches.

Pa’rus Trail is especially popular because it begins near the Visitors’ Center and campground, follows the Virgin River for a while, and terminates near the area called Canyon Junction. It’s not the most strenuous hike in the park, but, as you can see from Bernie’s painting, it is scenic enough to be worth hauling painting and camera gear, as we did.

Pa’rus is the Paiute word for “bubbling water,” referring to the Virgin River, which flows through the park and, over many millennia, carved the steep walls of Zion Canyon.
