Buffalo Mother and Calf in Grand Teton
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “BUFFALO MOTHER AND CALF IN GRAND TETON”:
“Buffalo Mother and Calf in Grand Teton” shows the glorious springtime in Grande Teton National Park. People flock there to see young grizzlies, coyotes, wolves, elk, and bison (aka buffalo). Mothers and their offspring are everywhere, like the winsome pair in this painting.
On one especially memorable springtime visit, I made close-up photos of this winsome mother bison and calf. Bernie did his own quick pen-and-ink sketches. That combination provided the raw material for this final watercolor painting, which Bernie did in his studio in Santa Fe.
We found this particular buffalo mother and calf in Grand Teton, but we also saw the same basic scene in Yellowstone National Park. The fierce, protective mamas were hovering over their babies in both parks, glowering a warning at any human who might venture a bit too close.
In all, this site presents seven paintings where Bernie used my photos to provide the details that he either couldn’t safely get close enough to see or didn’t have time to paint on site.
