Cedar Breaks
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS BIG, EVOCATIVE OIL PAINTING “CEDAR BREAKS”:
“Cedar Breaks” is my interpretation of the grandeur of Cedar Breaks National Monument, which lies close to Cedar City, Utah. It’s a bit northwest of the more famous Bryce Canyon National Park. It’s not as well known, but I truly believe it should be.
There’s not as much access into the canyon as at Bryce Canyon, but from the rim you look down into this amazing scene as well as across it. As “Cedar Breaks” shows, your eyes travel far west across layers and layers of varying colors and contrasts. It’s a dramatic, striking spot.
It turns out the trees that appear as green patches in the painting actually aren’t cedars but junipers. Early settlers misnamed them, and the incorrect name stuck. Who cares?

After Bernie’s death, I came across this email that he had sent to an artist friend. It’s worth sharing.
“My new oil painting “Cedar Breaks,” from Cedar Breaks National Monument, started with several decisions: Include strong foreground elements to give a sense of the size and scope of the park. Pull together all the elements that give the park its unique character—the colorful hoodoos, sub-alpine environment, and interesting textures. Keep the eye moving with strong diagonals. Balance warm and cool colors to create a sense of depth.”
