Grand Canyon South Rim
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ ETHEREAL “GRAND CANYON SOUTH RIM”:
This is one of the plein air watercolors that Bernie painted during our first visit to Grand Canyon National Park, sometime around 2000. He left no notes about this specific piece. It came early in his painting career, so he probably saw no need write any kind of commentary on his works. He just wanted to paint, and especially to paint the Grand Canyon.
And paint the Grand Canyon he did, for another twenty years… all the way up to “A Touch of Winter,” which he finished in the last months before his death.
But this is ethereal piece is still one of my favorites of all his Grand Canyon Sound Rim paintings. I love that soft pink wash he laid into the background. You see the rocks while still feeling the distance involved. To me, it’s absolutely lovely.
