Heading for High Camp
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ DELICATE WATERCOLOR “HEADING FOR HIGH CAMP”:
Sometime around 2000, Bernie and I took a winter getaway to a rustic dude ranch in the Colorado Rockies. We weren’t horse riders, but Bernie had a hankering to paint scenes of horses and riders in the snow. During the week that we spent in this place, he went out every day with the dudes, carrying his camera and sketch book because it was much too cold for plein air watercolor painting. (I mostly hung out near a cozy fire, catching up on my reading. To each their own.)
Later, back in his warm studio in the northern Chicago ‘burbs, Bernie made several “horses and riders in the snow” paintings, using the raw material assembled during our stay at this dude ranch in the Colorado Rockies. He sold all the others at art fairs the next summer, but this was his favorite, so he kept it. Two-plus decades later, as I cleaned out his studio after his death, I found it carefully wrapped in a portfolio of watercolor originals that he had safeguarded for years. And I was delighted to find it, because I still have happy memories of that weeklong getaway. Also I remember the evocative mood that he captured in several of the paintings he made there.
