Last Light at Snow Canyon

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARK’S DELICATE “LAST LIGHT AT SNOW CANYON” FROM SNOW CANYON STATE PARK:

“Last Light at Snow Canyon” offers a unique variety of desert scenery at Snow Canyon State Park near St. George in southern Utah. It’s carved from the red and white Navajo sandstone typical of the Red Mountains. Its diverse landscape includes extinct cinder cones, lava tubes, lava flows, and the sand dunes shown in this painting.

Like so many other southern Utah locations, it’s exceptionally beautiful in late-evening light.

As Bernie and I were heading out of the park after a full day of hiking, painting, and photographing, we caught sight of another car coming in. Bernie was at the wheel and didn’t have a good angle to get the shot. However, he stopped long enough for me to hop out and get it. I was lucky to catch the very last light of the evening, enhanced by the oncoming car’s headlights. Later, back in his Santa Fe studio, Bernie made “Last Light at Snow Canyon” from my photos. We were a very good artistic team!

A buyer in St. George, Utah quickly purchased this original watercolor from a gallery in that town. Clearly, Bernie’s scene hit the right note for that local collector.
