Late Afternoon at the Grand Canyon
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS “LATE AFTERNOON AT THE GRAND CANYON”:
I’ve often painted in the late afternoon or early evening at the Grand Canyon. It’s a challenge, because the light fades fast and shadows constantly shift. I use both linear and atmospheric perspective in an attempt to capture the canyon’s depth and vast distance.
I made “Late Afternoon at the Grand Canyon” live on the spot (plein air). It has a subtlety that reflects my mood and experience in that moment. I think it’s my best-ever painting of this subject.
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS:
Bernie was being modest when he wrote the notes above.
In 2006, he entered this piece, “Late Afternoon at the Grand Canyon,” in the prestigious, highly competitive annual “Arts for the Parks” competition. From an original set of 2,117 entries that year, a three-person jury narrowed the candidates down to the Top 100. They chose this painting for that “Top 100” group.
Bernie was delighted, even though he didn’t win one of the top prizes. We kept this painting, framed it, and proudly displayed it in our living room ever since. It’s never been for sale before, but I’m happy to let it go now. Time for others to enjoy it too.
This framed original painting is available for purchase, as are top-quality, custom-made, archival giclée prints.
