Mountain Color
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT THIS SPECTACULAR WATERCOLOR, “MOUNTAIN COLOR:”
Driving thorough the Rocky Mountains of Colorado on a fine fall day is always a treat for the eye. And this mid-September afternoon was no exception. Everything was ablaze with light and color as we explored a back road from Ouray to Telluride.
A dusting of snow had fallen overnight in the foothills, and while it already had melted off the flat ground, the slopes and shadowy areas were still white. Near the road, a few head of free-range cattle were enjoying the last of the summer grasses. It was an idyllic scene, too good to pass up.
Martha and I pulled off the road, and I did a plein air study on the spot. Later, in my studio, I used that study and Martha’s detailed photographs of the scene to create this more-polished watercolor painting.
MARTHA MARKS ADDS: For obvious reasons, Bernie’s gorgeous painting sold quickly from his gallery in Santa Fe. Fortunately, my own original digital photograph of it produces excellent giclée prints.
BERNIE MADE 9 WATERCOLORS FROM THAT ONE MEMORABLE TRIP: “Above the Uncompahgre,” “Aspen Shadows,” “Morning in Ouray,” “Mountain Color,” “Mountain Stream in Fall,” “Riding a Country Road,” “Snowy Tracks,” “Winter Rapids,” and “Vanishing Point in Colorado.“
Excellent custom-made giclée prints on thick matte archival paper are available.
