Paria Riffle on the Colorado River
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ COLORFUL “PARIA RIFFLE ON THE COLORADO RIVER”:
The “Paria Riffle” is the point where the Colorado River and the Paria River merge, just north of Marble Canyon and the Grand Canyon. This geographic area, known as the “Arizona Strip,” lies just south of the Utah-Arizona state line. It’s a remote location, because rivers and canyons carve up the area.
The word “riffle” refers to the two rivers’ currents as they merge. They’re not as strong as rapids,” but not smooth either. Here, Bernie shows us a closeup view of the water and the rocks at the confluence of the Colorado and Paria Rivers.
But there’s actually something a whole lot more interesting about this painting!
The sand bar that Bernie stood on to paint this riffle winds up being the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
And the rock wall that we see here ultimately becomes the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This is truly an amazing geological locale, as well as a fine artistic interpretation of it.
