Taos Gorge

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ BIRDS-EYE-VIEW WATERCOLOR “RAFTING TAOS GORGE”:

Here’s Bernie’s bird’s-eye view of the Rio Grande Gorge. Locals call it Taos Gorge. It’s an amazing black-rock canyon carved over millennia by the aggressive Rio Grande. This iconic river tumbles out of the Colorado mountains to the north and races south toward Texas and the Gulf of Mexico.

For most of its history, the Rio Grande only had to carve its canyon, and that was enough. These days, however, it also provides water for local communities and sports like the rafts that Bernie captured here. He punched the landscape colors a bit, but also captured the lush drama of this area in spring.

Even a bird would recognize this scene, I suspect. Bernie’s unique birds-eye-view painting is exactly as one sees it from the magnificent bridge that spans the chasm.

In the years since Bernie made this painting, this scene became part of Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. That’s very good news, because now the whole area is protected and will remain as we see it here. Bernie and I celebrated when we heard that news in 2013.

For a very different angle on this same scene, see “Taos Gorge.”

And if you’d like to see more intimate views of this same gorge lower down, closer to Santa Fe, check out “The Low Road to Taos” and “Rio Grande Medley.”
