Taos Gorge

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WATERCOLOR “TAOS GORGE,” ALSO KNOWN AS THE RIO GRANDE GORGE:

If you’re traveling around northern New Mexico, it’s hard to avoid the Rio Grande and its namesake gorge. And really, why on earth would you want to? That immense black-rock gorge is one of the most spectacular natural features in the southwest, and that’s saying a lot.

This surface-level view shows the Rio Grande Gorge, which is better locally known as Taos Gorge. But what appears to be just a slice in the earth turns out to be 800′ deep. The aggressive Rio Grande’s black side walls cut straight down as it rushes toward Texas and the Gulf of Mexico.

In this painting, Bernie merely suggests that depth. Instead, we see the fine Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the surrounding high-desert landscape of northern New Mexico.

NOTE: He captured a very different angle on this same river in “Rafting Taos Gorge.”

And if you’d like to see more intimate views of this same gorge lower down, closer to Santa Fe, check out “The Low Road to Taos” and “Rio Grande Medley.”
