MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “SAGUARO SUNSET,” FROM ARIZONA’S SONORAN DESERT:
In both visual and emotional impact, this brilliant, bright, cacti-filled, plein air watercolor piece is the opposite of Bernie’s cool “Morning in the Desert” plein air watercolor painting.
The landscape and colors are mostly the same in both paintings. But still, there’s a palpably different sensation here. It feels as if the birds and beasts and cacti and dirt have been baking all day and can hardly wait for the reliably cool night air to bring relief.
