MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ DRAMATIC “SUNSET RIDERS” FROM NEW MEXICO:

“Sunset Riders” incorporates everything that I consider the “Best of Bernard Marks.”

First off, it’s just flat-out beautiful. Masterful use of color and contrast to define a location and establish a mood.

Then there are the figures… both people and horses. Bernie loved painting both kinds, so I know he relished pulling this painting together.

And finally, it’s about as perfect a portrayal of the New Mexico landscape as one could find. Skies that might be unbelievable elsewhere are real here, looming dramatically above us almost every summer evening. A shallow stream that actually contains water — rare but not unheard of, even in this arid state — reflecting those fabulous skies. Sweeps of colorful wildflowers that arrive in late summer or early fall. And a silhouetted mountain range, of course, in a state so magnificently blessed with them.

Bernie painted this in the last year of his life. Proof, if any were needed, that he was still at the top of his game.
