Testing the Water

Children and water are an irresistible combination. Very fun to watch and to paint.

After completing one landscape study in Slide Rock State Park, just outside Sedona, Arizona, I’d begun searching for a second subject. I spotted this scene as it was taking place beside a shallow pool. The children were having a great time on the natural slide formed by the slick rocks of Oak Creek.

There was too much going on at once for me to be able paint the scene on the spot, but I captured it with photos, which led to this final watercolor painting, done in my studio back in Santa Fe.

The original painting was sold to a private collector by an art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
