Above the Uncompahgre

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ HUGE AND SPECTACULAR WATERCOLOR “ABOVE THE UNCOMPAGHRE”:

At the height of fall 2004, Bernie and I spent three weeks in Colorado, enjoying charming old mining towns and exploring the Rockies. As newbies there, we didn’t expect snow in September. But when it came we took full advantage of its beauty.

This painting captures a drive that we took up a steep, narrow road with no guard rails and a long, steep drop off the sides. (What looks like a safety barrier along the edge isn’t that. It’s just the snow that hasn’t been packed down by other cars’ tires.)

Our plan was to cross the mountain and come down the other side. But our car overheated, so we found a spot barely wide enough to turn around. After some tight maneuvers, we made it safely down.

But before we left, I took a series of photos that Bernie later turned into this painting. It has hung in our living room ever since, but now it’s time to let it go to new owners who will treasure it as much as we have.
