Aspen Shadows
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL “ASPEN SHADOWS:”
It was an early snow, even for the Colorado Rockies. This mid-September day in the Uncompahgre National Forest, not far from the old mining town of Ouray, offered treats for the eye everywhere Martha and I looked. The range of autumn color was especially lovely when contrasted with that fresh coat of white.
This particular stand of yellow aspens glowing above the snow-covered rocks beneath them provided a subject I couldn’t resist painting on the spot.
My plein air (outdoor) study and some good photos of Martha’s gave me the reference material I needed for this final watercolor filled with fall color, which I painted in my studio in Santa Fe.
MARTHA MARKS NOTES: This is right at the top of my list of all-time favorite Bernie watercolors. Hard to express how beautiful the original was. The buyer who purchased it from a gallery in Santa Fe has enjoyed it for many years, But still, I often visit this page to relive that glowing day. And I’m delighted to be able to offer a large, excellent giclée print of it here.
If you like aspens, please check out all Bernie’s other gorgeous paintings featuring aspens: Aspen Glory, Aspens in the Morning Light, Aspen Patterns, Aspen Shadows, Aspen Vista, and Sangre de Cristo Fall Splendor.
