ENTERING ZION
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ MAJESTIC “ENTERING ZION” FROM ZION NATIONAL PARK:
This gorgeous watercolor painting evokes powerful memories for me. It’s Bernie’s very personal view of the route that we always took as we drove into Zion National Park in southern Utah.
The grand red cliffs loom over the Virgin River as it rushes by on its way to join up with the Colorado at Lake Mead. That seemingly gentle river has roared loud and hard enough over its long history to carve the wondrous cliffs and canyons that we marveled at, but during our many visits we only ever saw it as a peaceful, welcoming presence in the park.
Bernie sketched and photographed in the park and did smaller plein air paintings of his favorite spots, but with one exception, this and his other larger watercolors are all studio works. (That exception is “Shuntavi Butte,” which he painted on the spot one glorious southern Utah evening.) He treasured Zion National Park and worked hard to capture its many glories.
