Mountain Goat in Glacier

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS PAINTING, “MOUNTAIN GOAT IN GLACIER”:

Many mammals inhabit Glacier National Park in Montana, including mountain goats. Most keep their distance, but the mountain goats seem oblivious to human presence. I was surprised to see this one come up as I was painting the spectacular landscape behind him. It happened so fast that I couldn’t’t get him into the painting at that time.

So I was lucky that my wife, wildlife photographer Martha Marks, was perfectly positioned to get a series of close-ups of this gorgeous creature. Her photos helped me with this final painting, which I made back in my studio in Santa Fe.

MARTHA MARKS ADDS:

The last time Bernie and I were in Glacier was in 2000, and although we talked about it many times, we never managed to get back. Bernie kept this painting safely protected in his files as a souvenir.

As he wrote above, this big, beautifull painting exists because I happened to be hunkered down behind a large rock with my beanbag and camera propped on top, waiting for something to happen. Suddenly it did. Without warning, this goat and several others came up over the ridge in front of me. I got a number of good shots of them, but the one that Bernie chose for this painting was the clear winner.

Bernie and I were a team, after all, in art as in life. And I’ve always loved his beautiful painting of this mountain goat in Glacier National Park, just as I loved my own film-original photos made that day.

In all, this site presents seven paintings where Bernie used my photos to provide the details that he either couldn’t safely get close enough to see or didn’t have time to paint on site.
