Grand Canyon Confluence

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ SPECTACULAR WATERCOLOR “GRAND CANYON CONFLUENCE”:

I remember very well the fine summer day in 2003 when Bernie made this big, gorgeous watercolor painting. I was right there, after all, not just watching as he worked but also walking cautiously along the rim, shooting the same sights that he was capturing on paper.

This was one of Bernie’s first pieces to incorporate a grand-scale view of the Grand Canyon in a single piece. It’s also a classic plein air painting… produced right there on the rim. He was proud of it then, and I still am proud of it, for many good reasons.

The sense of depth that Bernie captures here is quite remarkable. We see so much of this glorious national park.

Bernie offers close-up views of the precipitous cliffs that fall hundreds of feet at the exact spot where the Colorado River meets the Little Colorado River. The site’s very name, “Grand Canyon Confluence,” forces us to notice how the smaller waterway flows in from the top-left corner of the painting.

Bernie also brings to life the canyon’s dramatic washes of color and its distant horizon, which is muted here but still distinctive in its color and shape.

Soon after returning from that trip, we framed this painting and displayed it in our home. But in 2005, once Bernie landed a spot in his first Santa Fe gallery, he was happy when they sold it to another Grand Canyon lover.
