Jewelry Sellers on the Plaza

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ YOU-ARE-THERE WATERCOLOR “JEWELRY SELLERS ON THE PLAZA”:

Every person who ever visited Santa Fe, New Mexico has seen this scene. Not only that, but… every person who ever visited Santa Fe may actually have been part of this scene.

Why is that? Because it’s always the same scene. No matter when one goes to visit, it’s still there.

Yes, the specific faces of sellers and shoppers change from day to day. And for sure, the weather and the styles of dress change, too. This is 400 years of history come to life, after all.  And the setting is a 400-year-old building beside a 400-year-old Plaza. The people change, but the place never does.

Through old times and new, this unique building has seen it all. It’s the historic Palace of the Governors, which New Mexico’s Spanish conquistadores built in 1619. It has witnessed conquest, revolt, reconquest, oppression, cruelty, acceptance, commerce, accommodation, and most of all, these days… tourism.

Bernie’s lovely watercolor tells that long story in human faces, body language, and a generally tranquil scene of light and shadows.
