Kolob Perspective

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “KOLOB PERSPECTIVE” WITH DAWN LIGHT POURING INTO THE KOLOB CANYONS SECTION OF ZION NATIONAL PARK:

Kolob Canyons is a separate area in the northwest part of Zion National Park in southern Utah. There’s no road connection between the two, so if you’re exploring the main section, you have to leave the park and drive north toward Cedar City to get to this unique destination.

For that reason, the isolated Kolob Canyons do not get as many visitors as the park’s main canyon. However, its sculpted cliffs and forested plateaus are equally spectacular. Bernie and I visited there several times. We always came away awestruck, promising each other that we would soon be back. And except for our last visit, we always kept that promise.

This painting of brilliant dawn light pouring into the canyon is one of several large watercolors that he painted in Zion National Park and throughout southern Utah.
