Mother Elk and Calf in Yellowstone
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ SWEET WATERCOLOR “MOTHER ELK AND CALF IN YELLOWSTONE”:
A summertime trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and visits to other wildlife-rich places in the early ’00s inspired Bernie to try his hand at painting wild creatures. He’d always been content for me to concentrate on them, with my specialty camera gear, while he dedicated himself to landscapes. But on those trips we saw so much wildlife, especially babies with their mothers, that he just had to give it a try.
Since I was the one with the right equipment, he was happy to let me capture the details, as he focused on the settings and overall appearance of the creatures. Then, back in his studio at home, he worked his magic, pulling our mutual subjects into very special paintings.
In all, this site presents seven paintings where Bernie used my photos to provide the details that he either couldn’t safely get close enough to see or didn’t have time to paint on site.
